He was in command of the Wimmera on several brief occasions usually relieving the usual master when they took leave. The periods he captained the vessel included from 11 August 1913 to 1 September 1913 [on the Sydney-Hobart run] as well as during …1915 and…1916.

Captain Bates, senior master of the Huddart Parker Line, and recently in command of the Wanganella, retired after 36 years’ service in December 1938.
